School Counselor

Hi! My name is Ms.Kay Baker, and I am excited to be returning to Drexel Neumann Academy for my second year as the School Counselor! I earned my Master of Social Work from West Chester University and am passionate about supporting students as they navigate their academic, social, and emotional development.
Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, traveling, painting, and teaching dance. I am looking forward to another wonderful year of learning, growing, and connecting with our students and families!

A new school year brings lots of changes, and with change can come excitement, nervousness, frustration, or even a little bit of everything!
This month, I’m challenging our students and families to practice one small social-emotional skill each week.
Week 1: Name It
Take a few minutes each day to check in with your child:
“What feeling did you have today?”
There are no wrong answers! Encourage your child to name the feeling and share what may have caused it.
Week 2: Calm It
Practice one calming strategy together. Try:
-
Taking 5 slow breaths
-
Stretching
-
Listening to calming music
-
Taking a short break
-
Coloring or drawing
-
Saying a positive affirmation
Ask: “Which strategy helped you feel better?”
Week 3: Connect
Do something that helps you connect with someone else!
Give a compliment, invite someone to play, help a family member, or simply ask someone how their day was.
Week 4: Reflect
At the end of the month, ask:
“What is one thing you learned about yourself this month?”
Celebrate the small steps your child took to manage emotions, connect with others, and navigate the beginning of a new school year.
Family Challenge: Try to complete at least one activity together each week!
